A 3 mm key reaches the adjuster between the bars. About six turns go from closed to open.

back baffle.

Behind the face bars, a sealed sleeve holds six opposed blades driven by a self-locking worm gear. A hex key turns the worm from the front of the grille, and the worm turns the blades. Air pressure on the blades can't turn it back.

Why it holds its setting

A worm gear can turn its wheel, but the wheel can't turn the worm. Duct pressure, fan start-up and vibration push on the blades, and the worm holds them in place. Only the hex key changes the setting.

Why opposed blades

Neighboring blades rotate in opposite directions, so air leaves straight through the face bars instead of being pushed to one side. Opposed blades also give finer, more even control at partial settings than a single-blade damper.

Why it stays quiet

Blade pins run in nylon bushings that need no lubrication and don't click. The sleeve is sealed to the flange with a foam gasket, so air goes through the blades rather than whistling around the edges.
